CARIBBEAN DESIGN FOR EXPORT INITIATIVE
The Caribbean Design for Export Initiative was conceived at a meeting during the 15th CGCS in Barbados, during October 2008. A small group, including Patty Johnson (Consultant, TFO Canada), Michael Piggott (Head of Barbados Design Centre), Andy Manley (Design Consultant, Dominica) and Mr. Philip Williams (Executive Director, Caribbean Export) met to discuss how Caribbean Export might work to improve Caribbean design.
On February 11-13, 2009, a Caribbean Design Mission hosted by Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) was held in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The mission was divided into two parts, site visits and a Planning Meeting. Several recommendations including the establishment of a Caribbean Design Network (council) and national design networks were priority actions of the planning meeting. Other proposals included the establishment of national design networks; the creation of a database of design practitioners/ and related service providers, the creation of an awareness campaign that promotes the importance and use of design and the establishment of institutional relationship between the re-branded caribbean Gift and Craft Show (CGCS) and Onsite Caribbean, with cross promotion and benchmarking for development of companies for Onsite Caribbean launches.
A select group of persons involved in the development of Caribbean design, drawn from Design Agencies/Centres, Design Schools, Designers/Producers and Design Consultants attended the mission which included site visits and a planning meeting. Site visits were made to:
• The Jamaica Business and Design Centre, Kingston
• Edna Manley School of Visual Arts, Kingston
• National Gallery of Jamaican Art, Kingston
• Harmony Hall, Ocho Rios
